The present sheet was part of a group of drawings offered for sale in the London art market as Francesco Vanni (1563-1610), from the collection of the late Sir John Pope-Hennessy in 1998 (see Provenance). The drawing was subsequently lifted from its backing which revealed, in addition to other attributions to Vanni, a pen and ink inscription, probably a signature: Giovapaolo Pasani. This inscription or signature refers most certainly to the Sienese master Giovan Paolo Pisani, an artistic personality who has been studied by Marco Ciampolini, in his Pittori Senesi del Seicento.1 Pisani probably started his artistic career with Alessandro Casolani (1552-1606), though he soon entered the bottega of Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni (1568-1613), whose influence can be detected in the style of present sheet. For more detailed information on Pisani's artistic career and bibliography, see Ciampolini (loc.cit).
