Frame 38 3/4 x 31 1/2 inches (98.5 x 80 cm)
This painting relates to an engraving of the same subject by the Flemish artist Maerten de Vos (1532-1603) dating to around 1580. Among the legends that grew up in Europe during the late Middle Ages around the story of the Flight into Egypt was an incident shown here. As the Holy Family passes a wayside statue of the Roman God Mars, the pagan image, confronted by the sacredness of the child Jesus, breaks in two and falls to the ground.
Glue relined. Some shadows and contours reinforced. Scattered scrapes and small losses. Some small splatters of white (white paint or possibly gesso).
